Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet Advocates for Strengthened International Relations at ASEAN-Australia Summit Summary

Phnom Penh: Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, recently returned from a momentous visit to Melbourne, where he led a delegation at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit. This assembly commemorated the 50th anniversary of dialogue between ASEAN and Australia, a testament to half a century of growing partnership and mutual progress.

During the summit, the cooperative pillars of the ASEAN community were reviewed, and significant strides were acknowledged, particularly after the initiation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2021. Looking ahead, leaders from both ASEAN and Australia embraced the forthcoming Plan of Action (2025-2029) and endorsed the ASEAN-Australia Leaders' Vision Statement — Partners for Peace and Prosperity, as well as the Melbourne Declaration — A Partnership for the Future, setting a collaborative vision for the coming years.

Hun Manet emphasized the natural partnership between ASEAN and Australia, fostered by shared regional ties and characteristics. He expressed hope for the region's future, underpinned by the collective aspiration to maintain peace, stability, and prosperity.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance of effective implementation of multilateral trade agreements like AANZFTA and RCEP, reflecting on Australia's dedication to enhance economic bonds with ASEAN through its Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.

On the sidelines of the summit, Hun Manet engaged in bilateral discussions with global leaders. The meetings covered a range of issues, from bilateral trade with the Philippines to education and renewable energy projects with Singapore. The discussions with Vietnam's Prime Minister highlighted infrastructure connectivity, aiming to facilitate the transport of goods and people more efficiently.

Hun Manet also addressed strategic international concerns, stressing the need for collective action against transnational crimes such as human trafficking and cybercrime.

Furthermore, in every engagement, Hun Manet welcomed discussions on investment opportunities in Cambodia, inviting companies and institutions to participate in the nation's economic development.

This visit signals Cambodia's commitment to building strong international partnerships and pursuing economic, educational, and infrastructural initiatives that benefit not only Cambodia but the broader ASEAN community.
